The public is encouraged to take over the White House — Portland’s White House, that is. The historic bed & breakfast, which was recently chosen by Veranda Magazine as one of the nation’s finest B&Bs, is offering those wishing to be Commander-In-Chief for a time to buy-out the entire Greek Revival mansion, which resembles its Washington, D.C. counterpart. Those taking advantage of the new “take over” package will have access to all 9-ensuite bedrooms, each named after a different U.S. President and their First Ladies; living areas including the parlor, game room, grand entry area and formal dining room; large ballroom; and outdoor areas. Owner Frank Groff said that take-over guests will enjoy a Presidential gourmet breakfast each morning for their guests. The cost is based on seasonality and is limited to the guests occupying the rooms.
“One thing we’ve learned during the COVID-19 lockdown is that people want a change of scenery and they want to treat themselves to something special after being cooped up in their homes for so long. So, for those who always wanted to be President and occupy the White House, here’s their opportunity,” said Groff, who with his partner, David Krause, completed a $1 million restoration of Portland’s White House last year. “They and their guests can live in the lap of luxury and return to their daily lives refreshed and renewed.”
Portland’s White House, which holds a place of honor on the National Historic Registry, was built in 1911 for Oregon timber baron Robert Lytle, who spared no expense on its construction. He made it virtually fireproof with metal lath and plaster and tile roofs then carefully installed the very finest materials, including mahogany accents, wood floors and tasteful stained glass windows crafted by the Povey Brothers — “The Tiffany of the Northwest.”
