Most Utah Deaths Never Reach the Medical Examiner. Postmortem Pathology Offers Salt Lake City a Private Autopsy Option

Sep 28, 2026

Some deaths in Utah never come under the authority of the state Office of the Medical Examiner, which leaves families without a postmortem examination.

SALT LAKE CITY - Sept. 28, 2026 - PRLog -- Postmortem Pathology, a nationwide practice offering private autopsy services in Salt Lake City and across the Wasatch Front, exists to close that gap.

State medical examiner authority in Utah reaches only a fraction of deaths, somewhere near one in three. The office logged 7,899 death investigations over the course of 2023. Its mandate covers deaths that arrive without warning, involve violence, or carry circumstances no physician can readily explain. Even inside that mandate, a full autopsy is not automatic.

What remains is a large category of Utah families standing outside the system altogether. A parent dies in an assisted living facility. A relative is certified as a natural death while the family suspects a diagnosis was missed. A sudden cardiac death raises the question of whether surviving children carry the same inherited risk. In each case, a private autopsy in Salt Lake City is frequently the only way forward.

"Families come to us because the question they are asking is not the question the state system is built to answer," said Dr. Dan Lingamfelter, lead pathologist at Postmortem Pathology. "A death can be entirely expected from a legal standpoint and still leave a family with no idea what actually happened medically. That gap is where we work."

Timing matters as much as access. For families working against probate deadlines, insurance filing windows, or civil claims governed by fixed limitation periods, an independent autopsy in Salt Lake City can be booked directly and delivered on an agreed schedule.

Record access is a third consideration. Utah statute shields medical examiner files from open release. Attorneys who want them must first establish standing, ordinarily through written authorization from the legal next of kin, appointment by a court as representative of the estate, or a subpoena or order issued by a judge. An examination commissioned privately produces a report that belongs to the family or their counsel from day one.

Postmortem Pathology is run by pathologists holding board certification in anatomic, clinical, and forensic pathology, with case experience spanning criminal and civil proceedings. A standard examination covers inspection of the body inside and out, screening for drugs and toxins, and microscopic study of tissue. Pricing opens at $5,000. Findings stay confidential and are released only to the family or the parties they designate.

Families and attorneys pursuing Independent autopsy services in Salt Lake City can contact Postmortem Pathology directly to review case specifics, scheduling, and coordination with whichever funeral home or facility currently holds the decedent.
