Laserfoil Design and Print have a variety of printing processes of which letterpress has become a favourite again. Any of the processes can be used depending on the volume, timeframe of the order, artwork, budget of the customer, colour and special effects that are chosen. Despite the longer process it is favoured for precise delicate artwork and type and is often used for wedding invitations.

More information and some of the many prize-winning examples with letterpress debossing can be found at http://laserfoil.co.nz

The owner Tim Morris mentioned the preference of customers is the growing appreciation of the old letterpress process. The use of heavy impression on soft stocks gives a wonderful tactile aesthetic to prints making it very attractive for wedding invites.

The history of letterpress started when all commercial printing was done this way for hundreds of years. Since Johannes Gutenberg used the process in the 15th century through until the 1970’s letterpress was the only method of printing. In the 1970’s the quicker and more consistent process of offset printing replaced letterpress in most print shops.

The several stages of the letterpress process are lengthy and slow as it consists of composition, imposition and lock-up, and printing.

Because printing is done one colour at a time it also needs a separate printing plate for each colour increases the set up time on the press. For this reason, most letterpress jobs are usually one- or two-colour designs. The pantone colour system is used therefore colour is mixed by hand. The beauty and texture of the materials used for the debossed print is what makes it such a popular choice for special occasions such as weddings.

Printing large areas of solid colour is not recommended by Tim. Designs of items such as business cards or wedding invites give excellent results when using a white background and text or designs kept narrow without too many solid areas in it.

The Laserfoil Design and Print company has a relaxed atmosphere which is appealing to couples when discussing their wedding stationery design and method of printing.

The company has been awarded national prizes for their printing for the last four years running which is a compliment to the dedicated team that spend a great deal of time ensuring that the customer gets exactly what they want.
