During his active years, he served as President of The Radiology Group, Inc., a private practice of medical imaging in Chattanooga, Tennessee, from 1995 until 2015.

Graduating with the class of 1972 of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine, Dr. Mitchell went on to perform his internship at Provenant Mercy Hospital and his residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Colorado.
