In a recent interview with Doctor Relations, Advanced Gastroenterology Specialist, Dr. Kofi Nuako, highlighted recent study findings that promise patients undergoing endoscopic treatments an easier experience with better results. This is thanks to two newly developed treatment methods that have been introduced in the field.
The study findings were published in a recent issue of GIE: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, a journal of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). Dr. Nuako expressed enthusiasm about the findings, stating that they promise to improve the care given to patients while making it easier for specialists to provide treatment.
One of the studies revealed a better and more efficient way of collecting specimen for diagnosis from patients i.e. biopsy. Instead of having to repeat a biopsy procedure in order to get more samples for diagnosis, the endoscopic multiple biopsy (MB) method gives doctors a faster and more efficient way to collect, handle and process samples.
“It actually provides about 25 biopsy specimens just from one endoscope pass, so patients are not inconvenienced repeatedly for sampling,” said Dr. Nuako.
Dr. Nuako further explained that the samples collected using the MB method were of better quality than those collected using traditional methods. This will greatly improve the efficiency in the treatment of gastrointestinal tract diseases.
The second study explained a new procedure that can be used by endoscopists in the treatment of gastroparesis. The procedure, labeled POEM, that is Per-oral endoscopic myotomy, uses the endoscope as well as other tools and techniques to treat the digestive tract by either reshaping or loosening some muscles within it so it can function better.
“Gastroparesis is a condition in which a person’s stomach is unable to empty itself normally. Through the POEM procedure, we will be able to correct this without a surgical procedure,” Dr. Nuako explained.
“The success rate of the study shows that this is a procedure worth embracing, and my advice to patients is that they don’t put off treatment any longer since they may not even need to undergo surgery,” he added.
Dr. Nuako has become an expert in GI-related complications from his experience as the principal investigator in research studies conducted by Advanced Gastroenterology. In addition, his own research studies have been published in leading medical journals.
Dr. Nuako is passionate about finding new ways of treating GI-related complications and offering the best care to his patients. He reminds the public that prevention is essential, and encourages regular medical check-ups.
