December is Human Rights Month: Free materials available on the 30 human rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Most people do not know all their human rights. To inform citizens on what human rights are, free downloads of booklets and videos are available.

In 2001, then-President George W. Bush officially declared a Human Rights Week in December. It has since expanded to Human Rights Month and is celebrated internationally. December 10th is honored as Human Rights Day by the United Nations. Yet many people are not aware of all their rights under the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Immediately following the atrocities of World War II, the newly formed United Nations Human Rights Commission, under the chairmanship of Eleanor Roosevelt, then U.S. delegate to the UN, saw to the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which delineated the 30 fundamental rights that form the basis for a free and fair society. On December 10, 1948, the UDHR was formally adopted by the United Nations with the intention that the governments and people of all nations use it as a tool to reduce violence and discrimination and to help uphold the dignity and rights of mankind.
As monumental as that was, today few people can name even a few of their 30 fundamental human rights. To solve this problem, short videos were created to easily teach each of the 30 rights guaranteed under the UDHR.
United for Human Rights was created as an overall organization to unite organizations interested in promoting and protecting human rights internationally.
This year is the 75th anniversary of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and is being celebrated on the UN Office of Human Rights website with a daily countdown of positive stories on human rights helping to protect and invigorate communities.
United for Human Rights is urging people to get educated about human rights and create events and activities in their communities to recognize Human Rights Month and the upcoming Human Rights Day.
United for Human Rights is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to teach others about human rights, specifically the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and to inspire them to become valuable advocates for tolerance and peace. A youth component, Youth for Human Rights, specifically offers a curriculum and information for young people on human rights.
United for Human Rights and Youth for Human Rights in collaboration with other groups held a human rights walk on the National Mall on Peace Day 2023 to spread awareness of human rights. Additionally they have participated in art contests, concerts and other interactive community events to bring people together in recognizing human rights and protecting them.
United for Human Rights offers free online training as well as free downloads of booklets detailing each of the 30 human rights. One student who attended a seminar commented, “I am learning about rights I never knew I had! These are rights I now know about and can fight to protect.”
