Phase 1 of Schacher Orthodontics’ newly available Two Phase Growth Modification Treatment is where the actual ‘growth modification’ takes place. During this phase, Dr. Schacher and his team will use a variety of different methods to correct imbalances in the child’s upper and lower jaw. Typically, this phase starts once the child is 6 years of age or older, and is followed by a resting period where their permanent teeth are allowed to fully erupt.
Once the majority of the child’s permanent teeth have come through, Phase 2 of the treatment can begin. During this phase, the child is usually required to wear braces or other orthodontic appliances that will concentrate on the arrangement of their teeth. In most cases, this phase lasts anywhere from 18 to 24 months, and like Phase 1, is followed by an easing-off period in which the child will have to wear a retainer to maintain results.

Generally speaking, the treatment is used to correct issues like reverse bites, protruded front teeth, crooked or slanted jaws, open bites, and deep bites. Children also have a “growth window” in which adjustments can be made without surgery; if this window passes, invasive options may need to be considered, the team adds.

For example, the treatment can improve the aesthetic, health, and function of their teeth, and can also make them easier to clean.
