Gear for Life has released its list of good winter bivy sacks for 2019. A bivy sack is the best way to travel light while on a hike, trek or overnight trip. A good bivy sack can be an effective replacement for a tent.
Bivy sacks are lighter to carry and easier to set up than tents. This can be a big advantage in difficult terrain or poor weather. According to Gear for Life, a good bivy sack must have a waterproof top layer that keeps moisture out and remains breathable and comfortable.
A well-sized bivy would be about 80 inches in length and weigh about 13 to 15 oz. Bivy sacks must be able to retain heat while not allowing condensation to build up. Some bivy sacks like those made for the US military are built to last for decades of heavy use. These are made with a three-layer laminate fabric that is completely waterproof and windproof.
It is designed to provide powerful protection from the wind, rain, and snow. When this is used along with a winter sleeping bag, it makes a comfortable shelter in almost any weather condition. Military-grade bivy sacks are also non-flammable and machine washable. They are much heavier at 1.6 pounds which is more than three times the weight of the other designs.
According to Gear for Life, the weight of a bivy sack is one of the most important aspects. Packed size is another important aspect because they need to be easy to store away. Weather protection is next on the list and bivy sacks must be waterproof and completely windproof. They must have waterproof zippers and sealed seams.
