Filestack Makes Scanned Contracts Readable for Workplace AI Assistants

Oct 22, 2026

Companies are building AI assistants that answer questions from their own documents. Some of the most important documents arrive as phone photos and scans the AI cannot read, and nothing in the system says so.

United States, October 22, 2026 -- A new kind of workplace assistant is spreading through companies. Ask it about a supplier contract, a return policy or last year's safety audit, and it looks through the company's own documents and writes an answer. The technique behind it is called retrieval-augmented generation, and most of the money goes into the AI model and the search system that feeds it.

Before either of those can do anything, somebody has to upload the documents. That is where the trouble starts.

A contract gets signed on paper, photographed at an angle on a desk, and uploaded from a phone. A supplier sends a PDF that is really a stack of scanned pages, pictures of text with no actual text inside. A receipt is photographed in bad light.

To a person, a scanned page is obviously a contract. To the software, it is a picture. When the system tries to pull text out of it, it finds none. Nothing gets added to the search index, and the upload is still marked a success, because no step technically failed. Weeks later somebody asks about that contract. The assistant cannot find it, and answers confidently without it. No error message appears anywhere.

The angled photo fails differently. Text recognition on a tilted, shadowed page reads lines out of order and misses words near the edges. That garbled text does get saved, and it keeps producing poor answers for as long as it stays in the system.

Both problems are invisible from where the AI sits, and both start at the upload.

Gartner predicted in February 2025 that through 2026, organizations will abandon 60% of AI projects that are not supported by AI-ready data. In the same announcement, a survey of 248 data management leaders found that 63% of organizations either lacked, or were unsure whether they had, the right data practices for AI.

Three checks catch both problems before they reach the assistant, whichever AI model a company uses. Count how much text comes out of each page, and flag any page that comes back nearly empty. Straighten and crop photographed pages before trying to read them. And track every document individually, so one blank contract cannot hide inside a batch of 5,000 that reported success.

Filestack, which provides file upload and processing infrastructure to developers, handles that first step. Filestack document detection finds the page inside a photo, straightens it to fill the frame and cleans up visual noise, so the text can be read accurately.

Filestack OCR reads printed and handwritten text, records where each line and word sits on the page, and reports how much of the image contains text, which makes a nearly empty page easy to catch. For documents that are already digital, Filestack can turn a PDF into plain text.

The AI model stays exactly as it was. What changes is what it gets to read.

Two companies choose the same AI assistant. One feeds it a blank page and marks the job done. The other feeds it what the contract actually says.

Filestack's upload and processing services are available now, with text recognition and document detection among its AI features. Developers can create a free account at https://www.filestack.com/signup-free.
